Unlike projector headlights, which replace your car's stock headlights, these accessory lights simply add a ring around the low or high-beam headlight assembly to create the "halo" effect.angel lights for car While the resulting illumination is far superior, the main advantage of halo rings is their cosmetic appeal.

While there are a number of different technologies that can be used to create the angel eye effect, most modern units utilize a single ring of small LED chips to illuminate the inner portion of your headlight. This design allows for much more brightness than older CCFL or incandescent bulbs, and also eliminates the issue of hot spots that often plague other halo headlights.

The first incarnation of this technology was the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light, or CCFL, ring. This is essentially a regular florescent tube that's been shaped into a ring and has a clear cover. This type of ring requires high voltage to maintain the electrical arc, and it is therefore power by small inverters that are housed inside the housing.

In order to keep the ring cool, and prevent it from melting the plastic housing, these inverters use a special type of cold cathode phosphor that burns cooler than traditional filament bulbs. This results in a brighter, whiter halo ring that's very popular with car enthusiasts, but it's beginning to lose popularity as newer options become available. The Guardian Angel Elite, for instance, uses a ring of tiny SMD (Surface Mounted Device) LED chips to provide a more modern and energy efficient alternative to CCFL.
